What's Really Good!
My name is Ryan Byrd, and I will be serving as the College Adviser for Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology for the 2017-2018 school year! I am a 2017 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology with a second major in Religious Studies. I am a native of Williamston, North Carolina and a 2013 graduate of Riverside High School (in Martin County, i.e. the REAL Riverside High School in NC).
I wanted to serve as a College Adviser because as a young African American male who so happens to be an up and coming young professional, I believe that equitable education is not a privilege, but a right, and should be afforded to everyone! The college experience is one that I feel can enhance lives forever, as it is a time where you are able to blossom, flourish, and truly become the person you wish to invent. I wish to inspire everyone to be the best that they can possibly can be, and I hope to empower you all as students to go forth and revolutionize the world!
It is an honor to join the Cardinal's Nest, the Phillip O. Berry community, and to be taken as a newcomer of the Charlotte area as a whole! I look forward to serving a a resource wherever I am needed, and I love meeting and interacting with people, so please do not hesitate to reach out to me!

About the Carolina College Advising Corps
The Carolina College Advising Corps helps low-income, first-generation, and underrepresented students find their way to colleges that will serve them well. By providing well-trained, enthusiastic advisers who are close in circumstance to the students they serve, the program aims to increase college-going rates at partner high schools across North Carolina.
College advisers are placed in high schools and are immersed in the school setting. Advisers work closely with the schools’ counseling staff and work with students both in one-on-one and group settings. College advisers facilitate campus tours, taking students to visit a variety of institutions. College advisers do not recruit students exclusively to UNC Chapel Hill but help students find their “best fit” institution, wherever that may be.
College advisers participate in an intensive five-week training program on the UNC campus, as well as one week of training at the national level. They are trained to advise students on how to prepare for college admission, choose a college that matches their interests, complete admission and financial aid applications, and locate and apply for appropriate scholarship opportunities. In addition, college advisers provide parents with the information they need to encourage and support their children’s pursuit of a post-secondary education.
